How to improve Boston Celtics shooting No. 3) Bring in more ball handlers

The Boston Celtics are as short on ball-handlers as they have ever been with the departure of Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier’s free agency decision looming over their heads.

As it stands, Marcus Smart, Payton Pritchard, and Jayson Tatum are their ball-handling trio, with Horford and Brown taking the weight off of them for a few possessions per game.

The lack of ball-handlers on the Celtics’ roster means they won’t be able to utilize Tatum or Brown off-ball as much as they might like. Additionally, Udoka’s bench units will be fragile and unorganized with Tatum on the floor, which means they are headed for a repeat of last season if they keep their current roster.

Diallo is the only affordable option Boston could pursue in restricted free agency, but given the strides he took last season, that’s not a bad thing.

With free agency, Boston will have more options. Players like Patty Mills, TJ McConnell, and Will Barton would all be excellent additions to put beside the Jays, and except for Barton, all are likely to take no more than the full MLE.

Delon Wright, Thaddeus Young, and Kyle Anderson would all be great fits on the trade market and wouldn’t cost the Celtics much at all.

It would surprise me if the Boston Celtics didn’t side with the two former Spurs this offseason.

Anderson and Mills seem like it’s meant to be, and acquiring both is pretty reasonable.

The Celtics would have to move off of Tristan Thompson to create space and convince Mills to take a little less than the full MLE, so they have room to bring back Fournier as well.
