RFA #3 the Boston Celtics should pursue: Garrison Matthews

The Boston Celtics wing core is a little bit of a beautiful mess as it stands. Danny Ainge has stacked the Celtics roster with young wings with differing skill sets, but only two of them have blossomed into two-way stars.

This is not to say Romeo Langford and Aaron Nesmith don’t have potential, but if Boston wants to contend, it may not be a good idea to rely heavily on those two for bench production. Stevens should prioritize resigning Fournier, who can fill that wing role, but there’s another name he could do something similar.

Garrison Matthews should be at the top of the Celtics’ board this summer. With a limited amount of resources and money to spend, Matthews fits the glove almost too perfect for the Celtics not to give him a shot.

He’s younger than Stevens may like, but he’s proved himself two years in a row now with the Wizards and is ready to make the jump up to a more significant role. The Boston Celtics need shooting, and they need size, and they need someone who can give them both at a low price.

Matthews won’t cost Stevens more than $4 million a season, and if the Wizards match the offer sheet, he won’t cost more than a second-round pick to pry from the Wizards’ hands. Getting a cheap 3&D wing-like Matthews is critical for Boston’s short and long-term goals. This guy needs to be in green come next season.
