Boston Celtics second round draft target #2: Kessler Edwards, SF/PF, Pepperdine

In many pre-draft scouting reports, Pepperdine’s Kessler Edwards has been compared to Cs superstar Jayson Tatum. And quite honestly, that comparison is becoming more unfair as the months go by.

Tatum has since dropped 50 points in both an NBA Play-in game as well as a postseason game against a fully healthy Brooklyn Nets Big 3. Edwards has not yet proven to have the efficiency consistently to continue getting such a green light in a professional game.

That’s not to write off potential improvement from the rangy wing. But usually talent like Tatum’s is scooped up at the top of the lottery. Nikola Jokic’s don’t come around often. Willis Reed was the only other MVP (regular season or NBA Finals) to be selected in the second round.

While I was once higher on the idea of adding Edwards, he may become superflous with the presence of Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford, Jayson Tatum, and potentially Evan Fournier all soaking up minutes on the wing.

Especially considering his similar skillset to Tatum–who, like fellow co-star Jaylen Brown, is an on-ball threat–Edwards might be redundant at this point with the frontcourt minutes being taken by Al Horford, Robert Williams, Moses Brown, and (potentially) Tristan Thompson.

Verdict: Pass
