Boston Celtics: 5 free agents to pursue from the Southwest division

San Antonio Spurs – Patty Mills, PG
The San Antonio Spurs are currently in a very strange place.
After back-to-back seasons of missing the playoffs and DeMar DeRozan hitting free agency, nobody really knows what’s going to happen going forward. The Spurs have a roster filled with a lot of aging players who may be on their way out, including Patty Mills.
The Australian point guard is entering his 13th season in the NBA and his 11th under Gregg Popovich and the Spurs. Mills has never been the go-to ball handler on a team and has only started a mere seven percent of games in his career — he’s appeared in 739 total games and has only started 57 of them.
Mills has always been and always will be a main bench presence player.
Lucky for the Celtics, they need to fill out their bench to be successful. The bench unit has been so extremely depleted and is by far the weak link on the team.
Mills would be able to step in on day one and improve the bench drastically which could help bring the team one step closer to being a legitimate NBA Finals contender.
His veteran leadership would greatly impact this Celtics team. His experience under Popovich would also translate to the youthful Cs corps, especially as Brad Stevens was once thought of as being “the next Gregg Popovich.”
The addition of Mills will allow Payton Pritchard to continue his development towards being the true future point guard of the Boston Celtics.
