Spurs target #3 Ime Udoka could help Boston Celtics land: Rudy Gay

Now this is an interesting one. Rudy Gay suffered the worst injury you could have in the game of basketball when he tore his Achilles in January 2017. Before the tear, he was a legitimate second or third option, scoring over 18 points per game in his final season in Sacramento.

He signed with the San Antonio Spurs upon his recovery and changed his game completely. No longer a volume scorer hoisting up close to 15 attempts per game from the field, Gay became a more of a catch-and-shoot specialist willing to take a backseat role in the flow of the offense.

He is now a formidable long-range sniper, averaging over 37% from downtown in his three seasons with the Spurs. Now, granted, Udoka was only with Gay for one of those years, but his player-friendly reputation lends credence to the notion that there was likely a positive impact left in the short time the two were together.

At the right price, adding Gay makes a lot of sense. He would essentially replace Jabari Parker–who has a non-guaranteed salary in 2021-22–and be the bench scoring option the team has needed since the 2018-19 season.
