Boston Celtics young contributor #3: Robert Williams

The only thing standing between Robert Williams and the NBA’s top-10 center status is his health. He has all the physical tools, all the complementary pieces around him, and all the intangibles to become one of the best roll men in Celtics history. If Williams can get himself in top shape and build on what he started last season, he and the Cs will be a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.

As each week passed, it seemed as though Williams improved in almost every aspect which he lacked the week before. He began the season a poor defender in space and lacked awareness in the half-court on offense. By the end of the season, Williams was sniffing out plays before they happened and beating every defense to every ball on offense.

This offseason, Robert Williams should keep his body at the top of his priorities but adding a jumper and continuing to work on finishing through contact would help him greatly. He is skinny up top, allowing bigger fives to take advantage of him in the post. If Williams wants to stay on the floor against any and every match-up, he needs to put on more weight and become more adept at avoiding fouling.

If he can do all that, Robert Williams will become Udoka’s favorite player. His defensive impact will reach All-League status, and his rolling on offense will generate so many good shots the Boston Celtics might get spoiled. However, none of this matters if Williams can’t get in shape and avoid missing games, especially playoff games.

The Boston Celtics’ post-season goals rely on Williams’ body, and if he doesn’t work on it this off-season, he will inevitably get hurt and be on the sidelines for the playoffs.
