Boston Celtics award-winner #1: Most Improved Player – Robert Williams

Robert Williams had somewhat of a breakout season last year. Despite this, he only started in 13 of the 52 games he played in. On top of that, he only played 18.9 minutes per game. Many fans wanted to see him play more, but injuries kept derailing his progress.

Williams averaged 8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 blocks last season. With Daniel Theis and Tristan Thompson playing over him throughout the year, it was hard to put up much better stats at times.

If he gets the chance to be the go-to starting center, his stats could take a major leap. The same goes for his minutes, as long as he’s healthy.

Al Horford is back with the Boston Celtics and can help mentor him on both ends of the floor. One of Williams’ biggest issues is positioning on defense, and Horford has always been elite in that regard.

Offensively, Wiliams has the potential to be one of the best pick n’ roll big men in the NBA. If the C’s can utilize that part of his skillset, his scoring could see a massive bump.

His rebounding skills are super impressive for a young player. Williams is also a decent passer for a center, so his assist numbers could see a little increase as well.

Realistically, if Ime Udoka makes Williams the full-time starting center, he could average something along the lines of 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and over two blocks. The statline may be a bit optimistic, but that’s what being a fan is all about.
