Verdict

Given his colossal salary, poor shooting woes, undesirable scoring prowess, and intense injury history, the Boston Celtics should steer away from John Wall. Although his passing and defense would be great for the team, they don’t outweigh his woes on the court and on the financial front.

Boston would be better off rolling with Marcus Smart and Payton Pritchard and finding a cheaper third-string point guard.

The likes of Patty Mills, Delon Wright, and Tomas Satoransky would be far superior options than John Wall.

Each is a unique floor spacer and can facilitate on some level.

They are no John Wall in that regard, but the Boston Celtics will not be running a traditional offense led by a singular point guard. Instead, they will surround their two stars with capable NBA players and let them quarterback the offense.

Jayson Tatum has shown he can be a lead number one and is likely to be an MVP candidate next season. There’s no sense in crowding Boston’s books and taking away Tatum’s touches in favor of having a traditional point guard.

Floor spacers, defenders, and players that can make the extra pass would have more impact on the Celtics than a max contract point guard.
