Free agent #1 Boston Celtics should add to the Jays: TJ McConnell, PG

The best way to complement Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown is to find a point guard who won’t be taking a copious amount of shots away from them. TJ McConnell scratches that itch while also providing a scrappy defender capable of harassing the elite point guards of the league in small spurts.

An ideal role for McConnell is as a backup facilitator. Ime Udoka could end up deploying Marcus Smart at the starting 1 spot, but Udoka could do worse than McConnell and his 12 assists per 100 possessions in the starting lineup too.

Free agent #2 Boston Celtics should add to the Jays: Devonte Graham, PG

The Charlotte Hornets are perhaps the most talented team in the league at the point guard spot, with LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier currently holding down the position. Devonte Graham was once the primary scorer in the Hornets’ backcourt, but the league has figured him out somewhat and his efficiency took a step back in 2020-21.

Injuries were part of the equation, but ultimately Graham’s role in Charlotte has been a difficult one to pinpoint since the arrival of Ball this past season. That could lead to a muted market for the dynamite for the former All-American at Kansas this summer.

That would be ideal for the cash-strapped Cs, who own just the MLE to dole out to prospective free agents. Graham could take the scoring burden off the Jays as a second unit stick of scoring dynamite.
