Despite the early activity from the Boston Celtics this offseason, the organization still has a ton of work to get done in these summer months in terms of roster construction and free agency.

First, President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge, retired, with coach Brad Stevens taking his place for the future. Many fans asked for a change in the front office after an extremely disappointing 2020-21 season, but few expected Stevens to take his place.

Then, in his first move in his new role, Brad moved on from Kemba Walker, attaching a first-round pick to acquire Al Horford and Moses Brown from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Trading Kemba was inevitable, as the combination of his salary and durability is not something Boston can rely on when competing for a championship.

Both of these moves are certainly steps in the right direction for both the present and future of the franchise. However, with over three months until the next season begins, let’s look at 3 keys remaining for the Cs in this offseason:

Boston Celtics offseason key No. 1) Re-sign Evan Fournier

The C’s main in-season acquisition was Evan Fournier, who was acquired through the massive Gordon Hayward TPE.

Not everything worked out with the Frenchmen, only playing 16 games in green, partly due to contracting COVID-19 shortly after being traded from Orlando.

He had his ups and downs, such as going 0-for-10 in his debut game but is a very formidable complementary piece to the Celtics’ star power.

In the 16 game sample size, Fournier averaged 13 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists on 46.3 percent shooting from distance.

He was able to provide another look to the offense, both being able to handle the ball in the pick-and-roll and come run around off-ball screens for open looks.

When Jayson Tatum and/or Jaylen Brown weren’t touching the ball, the Boston Celtics struggled to score. With Fournier, Boston adds another capable ball-handler and scorer, helping alleviate the pressure from the Jays.

Fournier’s an unrestricted free agent this summer and the Celtics most definitely hope to re-sign him, as they had that intention ever since they utilized the historically large traded player exception to acquire him from the Magic.

With his Bird-rights, Boston has all the power to do so, as long as the price tag doesn’t get too out of hand.
