Notorious historical rivals Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers…making a trade? It can never be!

Or can it?

Lake Show Life’s Jason Reed thinks there’s a possibility that the two teams could end their ongoing 17-year trade drought and find some common ground this summer after the league’s only two 17x NBA Champions were both bounced in the first round of the postseason as #7-seeds.

Said common ground would be the C’s desire to move off of Kemba Walker’s contract and the Lakers’ desire to improve the roster through their limited means of doing so. As Reed points out to Laker fans that may balk at the idea of adding the balky knees of Walker, the ceiling of present-day Kemba may superior to the alternatives:

"While there have been no concrete reports of interested parties yet, we could see the rare Lakers-Celtics trade as a Kemba Walker trade between the two parties actually makes sense. And I know what you are thinking: Walker has not been the same player in Boston and his knee injuries are a legitimate concern. That is all completely valid but for the reasons outlined in this article, the Lakers may look past that and trade for the ceiling of Walker."

Reed goes into detail about two specific issues L.A. is facing that would force them to take on the remaining two years and $74 million still owed to Walker on his max deal.

The first reason is the Lakers’ limited salary cap flexibility. With LeBron and Anthony Davis’ massive deals on the ledger, there isn’t room to sign another max contract star…unless every single other player on the roster was moved/had their rights renounced.

That’s not the plan in Hollywood, considering how lacking in depth this year’s Lakers team proved to be in the end. Reed mentions the possibility of a sign-and-trade for Dennis Schroder, but the Cs would probably pass on handing another gaudy deal to an undersized point guard on the wrong side of 26.

That is, unless his deal is attached to other assets. Reed offers a nice deal for the new Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations to chew over, throwing in Kyle Kuzma and a future draft pick.

Other outlets believe the Cs will need to attach Walker’s deals to draft compensation just to move him, so Reed’s point of view makes the Lakers a much more palatable trade partner than anyone else.

That said, it isn’t yet known what Stevens is looking for in a return package, so stay tuned. Hardwood Houdini will provide all of the Kemba Walker trade coverage your hearts can handle.
