The Verdict

There is a lot to consider with this deal.  On the surface, a Lillard deal appears to be a no-brainer, but it’s never quite that simple when it comes to adding a massive contract like Lillard’s to the books.

As we have seen with Kemba Walker and many other players, 30 can be the age when smaller guards can see their bodies break down. The last thing the Celtics want to do is get out of the Kemba Walker situation just to put themselves in a similar situation with another 30 something point guard while giving up a player as talented as Jaylen Brown.

However, much like Steph Curry, Lillard’s game lends itself to more longevity than other point guards. Lillard relies on exceptional shooting and tends to avoid taking the type of punishment that guards like Kemba Walker or Derrick Rose often subject themselves to.

While there is always a risk when trading for a 30 something point guard the risks are a lot less with a guard possessing the unique talents of Lillard. If the C’s have a chance to acquire Lillard, they absolutely need to do it. When you can have a big two the caliber of Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard you do it and figure out the rest later.
