The hunt for the next head coach of the Boston Celtics is officially underway. Brad Stevens began the interview process over the past few days, including both internal and external candidates in the search.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that Stevens got permission to interview multiple assistant coaches around the league. The list includes Chauncey Billups (Clippers), Ime Udoka (Nets), Jamahl Mosley (Mavericks), Darvin Ham (Bucks), and Charles Lee (Bucks). In addition, Stevens also conducted interviews with Celtics assistant coaches Jerome Allen, Jay Larranaga, Scott Morrison, and Joe Mazzulla.

Andrew Hughes detailed the list of candidates involved in the current Bucks-Nets series, as three of Stevens’ choices are currently taking part in it. Stevens’ list of potential suitors is expected to expand far beyond these initial interviews, however.

Many other names have been tossed around the rumor mill since the job opened up. Sam Cassell (76ers), Becky Hammon (Spurs), and Kara Lawson (Duke Women’s Basketball) have all been named as ideal choices for the role.

As Boston’s offseason progresses, new reports detailing their search have surfaced. Jake Fisher of Bleacher Report recently disclosed that “there is a sense around the league that hiring a head coaching candidate who is Black will be a top priority for this position.” A claim that can clearly be backed up by Stevens’ initial interview pool.

Based on that same list of potential head coaches, another important factor in the search may be prior playing experience. Billups, Udoke, Ham, and Lee all played in the NBA at some point. Meanwhile, Mosley spent extensive time overseas playing professionally.

Other names linked to the job include Lloyd Pierce, Jason Kidd, and Kenny Atkinson. In recent days Terry Stotts and Steve Clifford have also become available for interview, while Mike D’Antoni has also found himself in consideration, per Jordan Schultz of ESPN.

Job vacancies have begun to open up in recent days, with the Trailblazers, Magic, and Pacers all in need of a new head coach. Brad Stevens will likely take his time making such an important decision but must be wary of other teams stealing his top choices. Boston Celtics fans expect the best, especially when it comes to their coach.
