Boston Celtics’ player #1: Tacko Fall

First and foremost, we all love Tacko Fall. He seems like a great guy and provides infectious energy to the clubhouse. He’s certainly a crowd favorite, so it will be difficult to see him go – but it’s most definitely the time.

Two years into his NBA career, both on a two-way deal with Boston, he has failed to make an impact on the court, only playing in 26 games. Additionally, only a handful of those were non-garbage time appearances, after the crowd had been chanting his name.

On the roster this past season, there was no reason to use him over Robert Williams, Tristan Thompson, or even Luke Kornet, as he was only forced into playing time if any two of the former three were unavailable to play.

The appeal to Tacko is his roaring size, clogging up the paint, and not letting anyone score over him. However, this fantasy can only be accomplished if the team plays a zone defense when he’s on the court, as if any opposing player forces him to guard on the perimeter, it’s an easy two points.

As one of two two-way contracts on the roster, along with Tremont Waters, he has failed to see productive playing time behind many other big men who simply do his role better. With teams like the Golden State Warriors utilizing their two-way contracts perfectly with Juan-Tuscano Anderson, the Boston Celtics may look to look somewhere else with these roster spots next season.

He has done tons of developing since he signed with the Celtics as an undrafted free agent, such as learning how to effectively run down the court. However, it may be time to develop somewhere else, as the Celtics need players that can contribute on a nightly basis in the near future.
