Boston Celtics: B/R believes Cs could trade Kemba Walker for Coby White
By Mark Nilon
The 2021 offseason was already expected to be an active one for the Boston Celtics, but many were under the impression that it would take some time for things to get rolling.
To much surprise, less than 24-hours after their gentleman’s sweep series loss to the Brooklyn Nets it was announced that General Manager and President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge, was stepping down from his duties, and Head Coach Brad Stevens would drop the clipboard and take on Ainge’s vacated latter role.
Now, with the former top-tier coach overseeing basketball ops for the ball club, he has his work cut out for him to try and save this rapidly sinking ship.
Perhaps the main goal for this Cs front office will look to accomplish this offseason is to clear up their over-inflated books by shipping away some unnecessary contracts. Of course, the most polarizing player that falls into such a category is Kemba Walker, who reportedly will be shopped this summer, according to Mass Live writer, Brian Robb.
We here at the Houdini are obviously aware of how difficult it will prove to be to part ways with the fallen star’s remaining two-year, $73.7 million left on his deal, but there are bound to be a couple of teams that could be willing to take on the veteran.
Recently, Bleacher Report jumped into the mix of trying to find landing spots for the point guard and, in turn, concocted a trade package that would send Kemba to the Chicago Bulls.
The full trade reads as follows:
Citing Chicago’s apparent “win-now” mode and the idea that the Boston Celtics could slowly look to recoup after their early-round exit from this past season, writer Greg Swartz believes that such a proposed deal could prove to be mutually beneficial for both parties:
"Although he battled knee issues throughout the year, Walker looked like his All-Star self during the second half of the season. Over his nine regular season games, the 31-year-old averaged 25.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.1 steals and shot 42.7 percent from three.A starting unit of Walker, Zach LaVine, Patrick Williams, Thaddeus Young and Vucevic could compete for homecourt advantage in the East, and the addition of Walker would help convince LaVine to re-sign next offseason.A first-round playoff exit means the Celtics clearly aren’t ready to compete for a title yet, so swapping Walker for White resets the timeline.White, 21, averaged 16.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists and made 37.4 percent of his threes in 54 starts. Boston saves about $10 million in the trade and gets them off Walker’s contract, one that could look really bad if his knee continues to get worse."
In comparison to Kemba Walker, Coby White (21) better fits the long-term timeline that the Boston Celtics have the luxury of being on with the likes of Jayson Tatum (23) and Jaylen Brown (24) serving as their franchise cornerstones, while his seventh overall pick pedigree adds yet another youthful former lottery selection to their core moving forward.
Along with the point guard, Swartz’s proposed trade would also bring on Tomas Satoransky, who would provide much-needed floor-spacing efficiency (36 percent 3-point shooter for his career), and Al-Farouq Aminu, a hard-nosed defensive-minded veteran who would add depth to their depleted frontcourt.
