So, I mentioned the price tag Paul just left Phoenix behind for, right? Over $44 million is no small chunk of change, so expecting him to take a significant discount–even for the right situation–is a fool’s errand.
He’d be crazy to expect an extension on par with what the Houston Rockets gave him when they landed him in a blockbuster during the summer of 2017. That said, he may just be one of the top free agents in the 2021 class after LeBron James and Paul George signed extensions to stay in L.A. with their respective franchises.
At 36-years-old, Paul offers a serious conundrum to interested teams. Do you invest in him long-term given his laundry list of injuries? It would take a serious gutting of the Boston Celtics roster to even get to a position of investing.
Obviously offloading Kemba Walker would be part of the plan, as would not re-signing Evan Fournier. But what if it took Marcus Smart?
Taking it even further, what if it included getting rid of anyone not tied down on a rookie contract? Creating the necessary cap space to land Paul will be a challenge, but…
