The Boston Celtics shocked the NBA world Wednesday when it was announced that Danny Ainge would step down from his General Manager and President of Basketball Operations duties, and Brad Stevens would go on to replace him in the latter role.

With this, fans and media analysts alike are left thinking up hypothetical situations pertaining to who may be in line to take over the two vacancies at both General Manager and Head Coach.

Though the Cs will likely wish to take their time with their decisions to fill these openings, already we’ve heard many rumblings in regard to who could be front runners to take on each of these titles.

For the coaching position, specifically, names such as Jason Kidd and Lloyd Pierce were immediately reported to be connected to the vacancy.

Now a few hours removed from the initial Woj Bomb that ignited this frenzy, the folks at Bleacher Report have gone about and concocted a list ranking a few potential candidates for the HC role and, ultimately, landed on current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach and former Boston Celtics point guard, Sam Cassell, as the frontrunner:

"He finished his career as a player with the Celtics in 2007-08, and he landed his first job as an assistant with the Washington Wizards in 2009-10.He’s been an NBA assistant ever since, with stints with the Los Angeles Clippers and currently the Philadelphia 76ers.He may not have the head coaching experience of Pierce or Kidd, but that’s an extensive history of NBA coaching on the heels of a 15-year playing career.Cassell also won three titles as a player, including one with Boston, where he was a backup guard on the team led by Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. As someone who’s been exposed to decades of NBA basketball, under the influence of various head coaches, Cassell would bring a wealth of experience to a young Celtics roster."

Now, frankly, we at the Houdini have a few other candidates we’d like to see ahead of Cassell as a potential replacement for Stevens — and within the next few hours, we’ll be sharing two, in specific, with you.

That said, perhaps keeping the job within the shamrocks family could be both a cultural and personnel boost that this struggling Cs team could use.
