Boston Celtics: Danny Ainge deceived us all this past season
As it turns out, Danny Ainge duped Boston Celtics fans in a big way this past season.
Before reading another sentence, please do realize Hardwood Houdini isn’t disrespecting Mr. Ainge or that we’re even mad at him for announcing his retirement today.
He will forever be enshrined as a legend in Titletown for bringing the first (and as of yet only) Boston Celtics championship banner to the TD Garden of the new millennium in 2008. That he did so by acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in one offseason–and reimagining the way contending rosters were built in the years that followed–14 years ago shows that his body of work has been legendary for quite some time.
Since then, he has drafted the next wave of long-time Cs in Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart, who have each logged between four and seven years (so far) in green and white. Two of them were All-Stars and the other is a former Defensive Player of the Year.
That said…Danny Ainge lied to us. Well, at least 3/4ths lied to us as of right now.
Just two wees ago, Ainge said that he would be returning to the Cs in 2020 while also guaranteeing the returns of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and new Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens.
He said that the day before the Cs were set to take on the Washington Wizards in the first ever #7-#8 matchup in the NBA Play-in tournament. Perhaps it was to calm the nerves of the players.
Either way, we now know he deceived us all with those comments:
Ainge has made a reputation out of not pulling the trigger on blockbuster deals, but he pulled the trigger on a seismic move for the future of the Boston Celtics franchise. Time will tell how this plays out.
For now, though, HH wishes Mr. Ainge luck in retirement (if he doesn’t take another NBA job) and wishes the same for new president of basketball ops Brad Stevens.
