Marcus Smart bolts the Boston Celtics for home

A stealthy free agent player seemingly every offseason, the Dallas Mavericks are in a somewhat similar spot to the Boston Celtics. They could end up in the postseason play-in tournament this year, and after injuries to Kristaps Porzingis that could slow him down, disappointment could be lingering after an optimistic postseason debut for Luka Doncic last year in the Lake Buena Vista bubble.

Dallas has two highly-paid stars on their roster, while the Cs are about to have three when Tatum’s extension kicks in this upcoming season. The Mavs may not need a third superstar if they can right the ship with their European in-and-out pair. A role player that can hit open shots and defend the team’s best perimeter players to make up for Doncic’s deficiencies on that end would be more than ideal.

While Smart’s 3-point shooting has fallen off the past three seasons, he was a 36.4% shooter in 2018-19 playing alongside a ball-dominant floor general in Kyrie Irving that he enjoyed playing alongside.

The setup in Dallas would be similar, as Doncic would be doing the heavy lifting and Smart would be able to stand in the corner and knock down threes that the Slovenian sensation could create for him.
