Boston Celtics: B/R predicts Victor Oladipo will sign with Cs this summer
By Mark Nilon
The Boston Celtics have found quite a bit of success throughout the month of April thus far, going 9-4 during this span including a six-game win streak in between.
However, despite said positive consistency, it remains evident that, should the Cs actually wish to have a chance at contending for an NBA title, they still need to make some adjustments to their rotation.
Perhaps upsetting to hear, as they already have two of the best two-way wings in the game in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as well as the Swiss Army man Marcus Smart and former All-NBA X-Factor, Kemba Walker, but in today’s league, the legitimate contenders are seemingly filled to the brim with star power and, if you’re not overstocking, you’re simply falling behind.
While there’s nothing that can be done in this category during this current campaign, come the offseason Boston could find themselves in the running for some of this year’s top available talents, be it via trade or, should they find a way to clear up space (which, admittedly, will be incredibly challenging), on the open market.
One player that has recently made his way into the C’s rumor mill is Miami Heat guard, Victor Oladipo, who, according to Bleacher Report’s recent free agency predictions piece, could make his way to Beantown on somewhat of a “prove-it” deal.
B/R predicts Victor Oladipo will sign with the Boston Celtics this offseason
Citing his fall from grace since his 2019 All-Star days, writer Mandela Namaste believes Oladipo’s asking price and popularity on the market come the offseason will have significantly decreased, which could give the Boston Celtics a realistic chance of snagging him:
"… just because Oladipo is not worth a max contract right now doesn’t mean he’s done in the NBA. Surely, some team will talk itself into taking a chance on the two-time All Star, and one of those interested clubs might be the Boston Celtics.Despite rostering Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart, Boston’s lack of depth has been one of its biggest flaws this year. The team has won seven of its last 10 games but is still just 32-29, tied for sixth in the East, and doesn’t have many pathways to significant improvement, given that (presumably) Tatum, Brown and Walker will all be on max or near-max contracts by the end of the summer.Buying low on Oladipo, putting him in Brad Stevens’ system and helping him play to his strengths might be just the low-risk, high-reward gamble the Celtics need to recharge their hopes of future contention."
Despite having a “down” season, the wing is still finding himself posting solid all-around averages of 19.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
His ceiling is still rather high even with his declining reputation as a player taken into account but, in truth, this latter part could actually end up boding well for the cash-strapped shamrocks.
What say you Boston Celtics fans? Would you like to see the team pursue Victor Oladipo this offseason if they could afford it, or would you rather have them search for other options?
