Boston Celtics Pick-A-Player: Atlantic Division
By Nick Swanson
Toronto Raptors – Gary Trent Jr.
Gary Trent Jr. is a player that I’ve been very high on since he came into the NBA. He really broke out in the bubble last season and has continued to shine in his time in Portland and now Toronto.
He’s taken that next step, becoming a legitimate offensive threat which will land him a huge pay day if he hits the open market. Trent is a restricted free agent going into the offseason, meaning that the Raptors can match any offer that he receives.
In his twelve games in the North, Trent is averaging 17.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game on 43 percent shooting from the field and 39 percent from beyond the arch. He has struggled defensively this year however, posting a 119 defensive rating, points per 100 possessions, on the season.
Trent’s primarily used as a shooter, over 55 percent of his attempts are three pointers, which is what the Celtics need as the game continues to move towards a three-centric offense. With players such as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown on the floor, Trent would have plenty of open looks and could be used as a spot up shooter or even a primary ball handler with the bench unit.
At only 22 years old, Trent has already shown that he’s a legitimate scorer. Having him alongside the Celtics young corps would elevate his game and throw this team into Eastern Conference Champions contention and even World Champions. The only thing is that the team would have to pay him well above market value.
