Pros of the Boston Celtics signing Isaiah Thomas

For us at the Houdini, the biggest factor for why we believe Isaiah Thomas could, at the very least, be considered as a possible target for the Boston Celtics is because of his familiarity and proven track record with the team and, more importantly, within a Brad Stevens-led offensive system.

Last he played in green and white, the 5-8 messiah found himself posting per-game averages of 28.9 points and 5.9 assists on 38 percent shooting from deep. He went on to be selected to his second straight All-Star appearance, finished fifth in the running for league MVP, and led the Cs to their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2012.

Now, four years removed from his shamrocks days, we obviously aren’t delusional in thinking that he’ll return to such heights (though, one can dream).

However, based on his production last season when playing with the Washington Wizards (12.2 points, 3.7 assists on 41 percent shooting from deep) and the three games he spent with the Pelicans (7.7 points per game, two of which he dropped double-digit point) it’s evident that even after a 14-month absence from NBA action IT still has what it takes to buy buckets.

Considering the fact that the Celtics’ second unit currently ranks 20th in offensive rating and second to last in points per game, the concept of adding a scorer on a low-cost deal who has only proven to excel when running in this team’s specific offensive scheme is one certainly worth considering, especially with the postseason rapidly approaching.
