Since the NBA trade deadline, the Boston Celtics have had a hot start, as they’ve won back-to-back games for the first time since the beginning of March.
Frontcourt talents Moritz Wagner and Luke Kornet, both of whom were recently acquired in the Daniel Theis trade, have already seen the court for the team, but with the Celtics missing out on signing the recently bought out LaMarcus Aldridge and Andre Drummond, the signing rumors have found a new target — former Houston Rockets center, DeMarcus Cousins.
According to Evan Massey of NBA Analysis Network, Boston is “expected to consider signing DeMarcus Cousins after missing out on Andre Drummond.”
This should come as no surprise, as the Boston Celtics have been looking for a big name to fill the center position for them for the past couple of seasons. In fact, in the past, we at the Houdini have touched on the idea of the team pursuing the likes of the former All-Star.
Now, Cousins is nowhere near the player he once was but he showed flashes of the old Boogie in his brief tenure with the Houston Rockets.
If Cousins is signed, one would assume that he would be the backup to Robert Williams III or even play minutes as a backup four, but that’s no guarantee as the front office hasn’t shown much faith in Williams during his tenure.
With the shamrocks trying to move towards the new five-out style of play that has taken over the league over the past decade, there’s a good chance Cousins finds his way into the starting lineup, specifically because of his ability to shoot the long ball.
He seems to be a perfect fit with the Celtics but that’s what we thought about Theis too before he was shipped off.
The biggest concern with trading for Boogie is the injury history.
He missed the entire 2019 season due to a torn ACL and missed significant time in 2018 after tearing his Achilles. Not to mention the historic drama-filled, diva personality that he had for several years in Sacramento.
We’ll have to wait and see if anything develops from these rumors.
