Boston Celtics PF/C Daniel Theis

The Celtics have a bevy of options in their frontcourt, and one of the more unique trade assets in that group is Daniel Theis.

Boston’s most versatile big man, Theis has played some effective minutes for the Celtics so far this year. The 6-8, 245-pound center from Germany has been a full-time starter for the C’s the last two years and is averaging 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game this season. He’s shown the ability to be an agile defender and is capable of making a few threes as well, connecting on 33.7% of his three-pointers this season and 34.2% in his career.

A playoff contender in need of post depth and versatility at the five could use someone like Theis. The question is, will the Celtics deal him?

Right now, Boston has a lot of needs to fill on their roster, and they have more players than roles in their frontcourt. With Theis, Tristan Thompson, Robert Williams, Grant Williams, and Semi Ojeleye all playing most of their minutes at the four or five, the Celtics have a logjam in that group with more pressing needs along the perimeter. Dealing one or two of those post players for future assets or more immediate help at other groups might be the right move to make.

Theis has a unique trade value thanks to his ability to shoot from the perimeter and his mobility on defense. When you add in his affordable contract (he has one year left, valued at $5 million), Theis seems plenty appealing as the trade deadline approaches.
