Boston Celtics: 3 players to avoid at the trade deadline
By Mark Nilon
Player Boston Celtics should avoid No. 2) Terrence Ross
Next up, we find someone who’s actually kind of the sure thing that we were talking about in the last slide.
Now in his ninth season in the association, Terrence Ross once again finds himself producing at exceptional rates. Through 35 games — 33 of which were off the bench — the wing is averaging a career-high in points at 15.5 a game to go along with 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.1 steals, and a half block per game on 41 percent shooting from the floor and 34 percent shooting from deep.
Making a career for himself as a quality scoring presence off the pine, this 25th-ranked bench scoring unit that the Celtics roll out on a nightly basis could certainly use for a guy like Ross.
However, the problem with Ross is the fact that his price tag may be a bit too luxurious for this already cash-strapped roster.
Currently under contract through the 2022-23 season, the 29-year-old will be making $13.5 million this season and will make an average of $12 million the next two.
Though Boston’s historically large $28.5 million traded player exception will cover the costs for the duration of 2020-21, they’ll be on the hook for covering his costs for the remaining years of his deal which, fiscally, would be irresponsible for Ainge to do.
