While it was news that was seen coming, one of the better big men of the past decade finally hitting the buyout market is certainly notable to Boston Celtics fans.

Having made an underwhelming free-agent big man signing this past November when Danny Ainge gave Tristan Thompson two years and $19 million, the Cs can potentially right those wrongs if they decided to pursue Blake Griffin.

Griffin was owed two years left on his deal before the Detroit Pistons bought him out earlier today, effectively making him a free agent immediately.

Per Adrian Wojnarowski:

With Griffin now on the market, one must think that his immediate goal is to earn a substantial salary on his next contract. At just 31-years-old, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Griffin could still convince a team to give him a front-loaded short-term contract following a successful conclusion to 2020-21.

He likely won’t be playing on the sort of make-good deals Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony needed to sign to facilitate their NBA returns at the onset of the 2019-20 NBA season. Contenders around the league may be willing to offer more than the minimum to bring him aboard.

While that doesn’t make it likely that a team with cap space throws him a large short-term offer (though don’t discount the New York Knicks to ever do something crazy), there will be competition for Griffin.

Is it a competition the Boston Celtics can win? Should they even want to?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of signing Blake Griffin:
