Why the Boston Celtics do it

The Boston Celtics would consider this deal in two different situations.

The first scenario would be the team bracing for a bit of a rebuild. Adding on two future picks and two young players not expected to fetch much on their next deals would be Danny Ainge preparing to play money-ball to build a roster around Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s massive deals–not to mention a potential extension for Marcus Smart next offseason.

Scenario #2 would be the Cs preparing to welcome a massive contract with their $28.5 million TPE acquired in the sign-and-trade transaction that landed Gordon Hayward in the Queen City. Whether that would come before the trade deadline or in the offseason is irrelevant.

Why the New York Knicks do it

Bringing Bronx-born Kemba Walker back to his home-city after a devastating pandemic tore through his borough would be the sort of redemption story the New York market is a sucker for. After creating countless moments in Madison Square Garden during Big East play for UCONN, Walker would be the Knicks point guard as Brooklyn would feature Northern New Jersey’s Kyrie Irving at the helm.

A battle for New York with two home-town floor generals would be quite the juicy narrative.
