With the first half of the NBA season set to conclude in roughly three weeks–and the NBA All-Star game (potentially) taking place–Hardwood Houdini has been busy cooking up trades for the Boston Celtics that involve their historic $28.5 million traded player exception.

Said TPE was created when Danny Ainge cut the cord (perhaps too late) on Gordon Hayward and sent him to the Charlotte Hornets.

The jury is out on whether or not Hayward may actually be in a better place with the ascending Hornets, who sit just a game back of the Cs in the standings entering play Sunday. There’s a legitimate buzz in “Buzz City” for the first time in a long time, and to make matters worse, Terry Rozier is in tow and having his best year as a pro.

The longer the Cs don’t use their TPE on an impact player and stayed mired in mediocrity, the longer the optics will suffer. As time goes on, the sting of the 2020 offseason could simmer among fans–especially if no meaningful moves are made for the rest of the season–until Boston inevitably bows out of the postseason early again because they didn’t stock up on firepower to match up with the Nets/Bucks/76ers.

That doesn’t have to be the reality, though.

While HH has delved into the idea of guys like Harrison Barnes and John Collins, Friday night’s contest against the Detroit Pistons inspired the NBC Sports broadcast team to discuss a new name…Jerami Grant:

If it were up to Brian Scalabrine, Danny Ainge would be phoning Troy Weaver immediately to add the tweener forward’s versatility to the Boston Celtics lineup.

On the other hand, Abby Chin and Chris Forsberg think there are other preferable options Ainge should explore instead.
