Boston Celtics: 3 additions from 2020 offseason that could be traded
As my co-editor, Mark Nilon, recently pointed out, the Boston Celtics may not have filled their roster with talent that has contributed to improvements in 2020-21 this past offseason:
"Though Danny Ainge and co. did manage to sign two players in Tristan Thompson and Jeff Teague, who play positions that were in need of bolstering within the rotation — center and backup point guard –, to date they have not had the impact that many (including ourselves) believed they would coming in. While there’s still time for these players to step things up (after all, we still have 47 games left to play), at the moment, their free agency signings are looking more like roster fillers than actual difference makers."
Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale was even harsher on the additions the team made this offseason:
"Free agency is most memorable for what the Boston Celtics didn’t do: capitalize on Gordon Hayward’s departure beyond a trade exception, acquire Myles Turner or use their non-taxpayer mid-level to address their backup playmaking void and dwindling wing depth."
The 2020 offseason wasn’t a total failure, but the team has taken steps backward after failing to acquire a player of value this past November. Gordon Hayward was a golden ticket to acquiring a difference-maker, but luckily the window to cash in on sign-and-trading his contract has not closed.
Danny Ainge can make up for his lackluster offseason by making a deal, and with most players signed this past offseason now eligible to be dealt, the following 3 2020 Celtics signees could be dealt by the trade deadline:
Boston Celtics 2020 addition that could be traded #1: Aaron Nesmith
Aaron Nesmith has not been rumored to be dealt, and he has served his (admittedly minimal) role admirably. If the Boston Celtics were to pull the trigger on a blockbuster deal, however, his shooting stroke (41% from 3 at Vanderbilt) could entice rebuilding teams looking to deal disenfranchised stars.
