Why the Boston Celtics do it

Danny Ainge would be going all-in on the 2020-21 season with this move, but with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both playing at near-All-NBA levels, why not try to get over the hump with such a blockbuster?

This deal would give the Cs two starters and two knock-down 3-point shooters that can create their own shot. It’d be worth all of the draft picks and their highest-paid player to get it done.

Why the Toronto Raptors do it

This move would give the keys to the Raptors offense directly to Fred VanVleet while also supplying the rotation with another switchable wing (Otto Porter) and a potential franchise big man (Lauri Markkanen) who has shown flashes of being a dominant offensive fulcrum.

Tomas Satoransky would be a steady hand next to VanVleet if Nick Nurse opted to start him, but the influx of deployable rotation talent would give the 2019 champs plenty of versatility in lineup-crafting.

Why the Chicago Bulls do it

This would be quite a shakeup for Billy Donavan’s roster, but it would give him several things.

The first would be a franchise point guard. Donovan has had the privilege of coaching NBA teams with an All-Star point guard (Russell Westbrook, then Chris Paul in Oklahoma City) but now finds himself starting Tomas Satoransky (a steady hand but far from a star) and Coby White (an in-progress combo guard who may best be suited for a sixth man role).

Walker would bring stability to the offense, and he may even prove capable of once again dragging an undermanned franchise to the postseason (hello, Charlotte).

This deal would also bring a recent lottery pick (Romeo Langford) and a steady big man (Chris Boucher) that could replace Markkanen’s shooting, currently converting on 44.4% of his 3-point attempts while taking more than three such shots per game.

Of course, giving up both LaVine and Markkanen is a huge sacrifice, so bringing on a total of four draft picks from Boston would help Artūras Karnišovas sleep at night. He’d likely be sleeping well knowing he could still build around a young core of Wendell Carter, Patrick Williams, and Coby White.
