Boston Celtics: 2 Kemba Walker-Kyle Lowry trade packages
The Toronto Raptors may be heading for divorce with Kyle Lowry, and the Boston Celtics should aim to be the ones to nab the former NBA Champion should those two sides ultimately depart after almost nine years together.
Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer quoted an unnamed Western Conference executive, who believes the time has come for Lowry to find a new home:
"With over 20 games already postponed this season, it’s been difficult for NBA teams to evaluate their rosters. And the result is a muddied picture of who will buy and who will sell ahead of the league’s annual trade deadline on March 25. The biggest domino that could fall and may impact the title race: Kyle Lowry. There is a portion of Raptors personnel, league sources said, that believes the franchise should bid its beloved All-Star farewell and begin Toronto’s next chapter in earnest. “There’s a time capsule for everybody and everything,” said one Western Conference executive, “and it’s probably just time to move on.”"
There’s fire to that smoke. The Raptors have struggled this season–one which has been turned on its head for the team being banned from their homes in Toronto and misplaced in Tampa Bay in the interim–and struggling teams with an aging veteran on an expiring contract tend to see what they can fetch for such players on the open market.
I recently threw out Lowry as a possible point guard to trade Kemba Walker for:
"Scoring just 13 points in game seven, and is following that up with a scoring and efficiency dip in 2020-21 (his 3-point shooting has cratered to a mere 23%). In turn, Toronto has fallen from the ranks of a title contender, and they could potentially even fall out of the postseason altogether if they can’t completely climb out of the early-season hole they dug themselves in. If that happens, Lowry will surely be dealt by the deadline. Being that he is on an expiring contract, plenty of contenders would be lining up for him in that case. Here’s hoping the Boston Celtics throw their hat into the mix, swapping out the remaining two expensive years on Walker’s deal for a much cheaper rate on Lowry’s next deal."
Today, I break down two specific trade packages I believe the Boston Celtics should pursue:
