Boston Celtics: B/R tabs Carsen Edwards as a ‘must trade’ asset
By Mark Nilon
The Boston Celtics could find themselves looking to make moves at some point this season, and one specific player should be seen as a ‘must trade’ asset.
With the 2020-21 season finishing off its second week of action, the Boston Celtics find themselves embarking on yet another playoff-hopeful campaign.
After a stellar 2019-20 season that saw the shamrocks make it to within two games of reaching their first NBA Finals in over a decade, they look to this year as an opportunity to get over the proverbial hump and put themselves in a prime position to raise banner No. 18.
Bolstering and better-molding their roster will be a major factor in accomplishing such a feat this season. Ways to do this include waiting for players to get healthy, adding players to the roster, and cutting ties with those that have little to no impact to create space for more worthy commodities.
In regard to this latter task, Bleacher Report believes there to be one specific player Boston should try and part ways with, preferably via trade, this season.
That man: Carsen Edwards.
Citing his lowly placement within the C’s rotation coupled with his underwhelming production since coming aboard last season, writer Dan Favale believes Edwards is the odd-man-out in regard to all players found on the active roster:
"Carsen Edwards is the lowest-hanging fruit, and in this case, the right choice. He has fallen firmly behind Payton Pritchard and Jeff Teague in the backcourt pecking order, racking up mostly DNPs to start the season. If he’s not going to crack the rotation now, when Walker is on the sidelines, he probably won’t ever be a factor.Dangling his $1.5 million salary won’t net the Celtics much, but they can move it just about anywhere, and he retains some appeal as a prospective marksman for teams in need of an offensive firecracker. In the event Boston decides to use all or part of the $28.5 million Gordon Hayward trade exception, Edwards is the player most likely to wind up elsewhere should the C’s still need to create a roster spot."
Since being selected 33rd overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, Carsen Edwards has posted unimpressive averages of 3.3 points on 34 percent shooting from the floor and 32 percent shooting from deep.
Once seen as a potential draft steal, the 22-year-old has yet to live up to the lofty expectations that Boston Celtics fans (perhaps unjustly) had for him.
As far as B/R is concerned, parting ways with him via trade this season would be in the best interest of Danny Ainge and co.
