Tonight is the first preseason game for the Boston Celtics, and we will all get a chance to assess the roster as it is. Today, the Houdini assesses the options the Cs could have gotten for the money they signed for.

Tonight marks the first of two exhibition contests for the Boston Celtics, meaning just three months after the team bowed out of the postseason, they are back on the court. I guess that evens everything out for the four-month hiatus the league took back when the world was afraid to leave the house.

Anyway, the Cs now feature a host of new faces, from recent draftees to free-agent signings. While Danny Ainge did live up to the “trader Danny” label, he only sent away the likes of Enes Kanter and Vincent Poirier in roster-clearing deals for low-end future second-round draft picks.

While Tristan Thompson and Jeff Teague was a decent haul considering the team’s needs, the Cs could have also pursued these three free agents instead…especially given the price tags they ended up signing on for:

Aron Baynes

It is extremely disappointing that Aron Baynes ended up back in the Atlantic Division, but not with the Boston Celtics. The Aussie signed a two-year deal for $14 million with the Toronto Raptors, who will be playing in Tampa Bay for the first portion of the season at least.

That Baynes signed for $5 million less over two years than what the team got for Tristan Thompson is extra disappointing considering Baynes is capable of far more on the offensive end than Thompson.
