Why the Boston Celtics do it

Even though it may not be the case at the moment, in time, Lauri Markkanen will be the best player in this deal. In fact, by the time that happens, the gap between him and whoever is next could be quite considerable.

Markkanen is the best true power forward in the NBA behind Anthony Davis, as the art of the true power forward is dying out somewhat. His arrival in Boston alongside Daniel Theis, Robert Williams, or even newcomer Tristan Thompson could be the impetus for the classic 4 coming back into style.

Otto Porter and Ryan Arcidiacono are two solid role players that could boost Boston’s bench for the time being. Porter could have the chops to start at his best, but the depth this deal provides is a nice swap for giving up the surest thing on the roster.

Why the Chicago Bulls do it

Chicago will be relying on Coby White as the primary ball-handler in 2020-21, but that isn’t exactly the gameplan for a team looking to contend right away. That isn’t what the team has indicated it wants to do, especially after only handing out free agent contracts to the likes of Garrett Temple and Denzel Valentine.

That said, with Billy Donovan in tow, the focus could shift to winning at any time. Walker would be the perfect point guard to take the team to the next level. Donovan has thrived with All-NBA point guards leading his offense, making the postseason with Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul in tow in OKC, so Walker could be another in a long line of floor generals thriving under the tutelage of the Rockville Centre, NY, native.
