Why the Boston Celtics do it

Mike Muscala is a nice option for the Boston Celtics as a utility big man. He is certainly a hell of a lot more useful than Vincent Poirier was for the team in 2019-20. Funny enough, Poirier is actually on the Thunder now, and this trade would send two of his former teammates to Oklahoma City with him.

Danny Ainge would be sacrificing a draft pick to clear up some roster space, but neither Ojeleye nor Edwards projects to have any bit of a long-term future in Beantown. The team would be closer to a championship with almost any free agent Ainge could find than with either of these guys on the roster.

Why the Oklahoma City Thunder do it

This deal is just a continuation of the asset-accumulation Sam Presti and company have been indulging in this offseason. Neither Ojeleye nor Edwards has a future in Oklahoma City either, but they have a clearer path to minutes than they do in Boston…where a championship is expected after the team proved capable of hanging with the big dogs of the Eastern Conference.

A second-round pick is a nice get for Muscala, who doesn’t hold much value sitting on the Thunder roster as is.
