DeMarcus Cousins

As you can see in the photo above, DeMarcus Cousins was last seen on a basketball court on a team that was one ill-timed Kevin Durant injury away from winning the 2019 NBA Championship. Sorry Toronto Raptors fans, that’s not the Houdini being salty the Raps just signed Aron Baynes away from the Cs…it’s the truth.

Anyway, Cousins was last seen this season on the sidelines as a spectator for the Los Angeles Lakers after tearing his ACL last season. That, of course, followed a 2018 Achilles tear that took hundreds of millions of dollars out of his pocket.

Cousins will likely never sniff that sort of payday ever again. That said, he could still replicate his 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists per game stat line from the 2018-19 season he had with the Warriors if given the minutes.

The beauty of it all is that Stevens has the big man depth currently to move Cousins along slowly as he recovers from a second major injury in as many years. “Boogie” is no longer reliable to be anything close to a superstar.

But the Celtics are looking for a fourth big man at this stage in free agency. None of the remaining free agents have the ceiling Cousins has, and none of the current incumbent Boston bigs have the shooting, passing and post-up abilities he has either.

On a prove-it contract, Cousins is a gamble worth taking…especially if he doesn’t prove he can stay healthy in training camp and the team simply cuts bait before it gets too far.
