Why the Boston Celtics do it

Larry Nance Jr. has already been linked to the Cs this offseason:

"“A better but riskier path might be an all-in-one type arrangement, where they trade the 14th pick, Kanter and Poirier, and get back a legitimate frontcourt player in return,” Hollinger wrote. “The most obvious target for such a deal would be Cleveland’s Larry Nance, who could play 4 and 5 for them and who makes $11.7 million, $10.7 million and $9.7 million over the next three seasons.”"

While that exact trade package no longer exists, the Cavaliers could be enticed by a package headlined by Langford, Robert Williams, and next year’s first-round pick, projected to be in the late-20’s if there is no regression.

Why the Cleveland Cavaliers do it

Larry Nance doesn’t seem long for the Land, and he really shouldn’t be if there isn’t a major roster shift. Kevin Love, Andre Drummond, and Tristan Thompson were the team’s highest-paid players last season, and all patrol the paint.

Even if Thompson doesn’t return, it objectively makes more sense for him to find a new role on a team far more built for another title run anytime soon in Boston.
