Why the Boston Celtics do it

On the surface, this is a minor splash for both the Cs and Rockets. If you look closer at what Danny Ainge has been trying to accomplish with his roster, though, it becomes clear that the wing depth that seems to be a priority these days would be ironclad for Brad Stevens and co.

Danuel House and Ben McLemore are both hyper-accurate 3-point shooters who can space the floor in small-ball lineups for Stevens alongside Grant Williams off the pine. Giving up two 2019 draftees is tough, but it’s necessary for this deal to boost the current core’s supporting cast.

Why the Houston Rockets do it

The Houston Rockets could continue to tear down their roster after trading away Robert Covington and getting involved with teams about a potential Russell Westbrook trade. If so, House and McLemore don’t hold the same value.

Romeo Langford and Carsen Edwards hold far more value to a franchise that could be staring down the barrel of a major player development phase after focusing their development on their one superstar in James Harden.
