Why the Boston Celtics do it

Otto Porter and Lauri Markkanen are both better players than anyone in the last return, and it is worth giving up a draft pick to dramatically bolster both the starting lineup and the second unit. Markkanen and Porter could theoretically start on a squad flanked by the Marcus Smart-Jaylen Brown-Jayson Tatum trio.

Tomas Satoransky can also step in as the starter, giving the team plenty of versatility.

Why the Chicago Bulls do it

Chicago brings in both Kemba Walker and Daniel Theis as starters from Boston. The pair was part of one of the league’s strongest starting fives on both ends of the floor. Bringing in that sort of stability for Billy Donovan in his first year as head coach of the Chicago Bulls is key to sustaining success in the longterm.

Adding Walker’s quarantine buddy in Grant Williams is a nice thing to do, and Boston’s 2020 first-round pick has value in a return for a Bulls team that is not an immediate contender by any stretch even with Walker in tow.
