Why the Boston Celtics do it

Again, Steven Adams gives the Cs quite the fearsome fivesome, but this deal also provides Boston with one of the league’s premier 3-point shooters in J.J. Redick. Having that sort of reliable floor-spacing can allow Brad Stevens to experiment with small-ball lineups late in games to spell Adams when the Cs need a bucket in crunch time.

Why the Oklahoma City Thunder do it

This deal is also heavy on picks and young players, but with the added bonus of adding New Orleans’ lottery pick as well. Several first-rounders is a nice jumping-off point for a rebuilding franchise that doesn’t seem to run out of room in their draft cupboard. Remember, they did just acquire even more draft picks from the Schroder and Paul deals.

Why the New Orleans Pelicans do it

With Derrick Favors set to hit free agency, the Pelicans can swiftly replace him with a $5 million starter from a top 5 team on both ends, Daniel Theis. Gordon Hayward adds another dynamic playmaker to a lineup featuring All-Star Brandon Ingram and future perennial All-Star Zion Williamson.
