Rumored trade Boston Celtics should avoid No. 3) CJ McCollum comes to the Cs

For the record, let me just quickly state that I actually really respect Channing Frye, who is the man that brought up this aforementioned idea. Furthermore, let me also state that the former NBA player was not saying that this was actually a deal either team was considering — to his knowledge, at least.

With that said, let’s hope that this specific package never picks up any momentum because, honestly, it’s one of the worst ideas for the Boston Celtics that I’ve heard in quite some time.

The 15-year veteran threw out the outlandish trade scenario on the “Talkin’ Blazers” podcast that sends Trailblazers guard C.J. McCollum to Beantown in exchange for Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart.

"“If you want CJ McCollum and somebody, you’d have to give me Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart,” Frye said, as transcribed by Celtics Wire. “That’s what I see CJ’s value as.”"

Now look, McCollum is clearly a fantastic player in this league. After a career year in 2019-20, posting impressive averages of 22.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game on 45 percent shooting from the floor and 38 percent shooting from deep, one could even go as far as to state that the 28-year-old is somewhat underrated.

That said, in no world is he worth giving up these aforementioned players for.

Both Brown and Smart, too, are both coming off of career years in 2019-20.

The former recently put up averages of 20.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals a game on 48 percent shooting from the floor and 38 percent shooting from deep.

The latter, as pointed out in an earlier slide, put forth impressive averages of 12.9 points, 4.9 assists, and 1.7 steals per game and is a 2x NBA All-Defensive First Team selection.

It’s our belief that Brown for McCollum alone would be a stupid idea for the shamrocks to consider, as the Celtics wing is four years younger and has the upside of being an even better talent than Portland’s shooting guard. Now Frye says that the deal would NEED to include Marcus Smart on top of it?

No, no, no!

If this deal were to ever happen, Danny Ainge’s head would need to then be removed via guillotine.
