2016 NBA Champion and retired NBA big man Channing Frye got very ahead of himself when he proposed a trading landing C.J. McCollum with the Boston Celtics for Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart.

Some NBA players have come back to have very fruitful careers as general managers. A fine and shining example of that is Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge, whose brain we like to get behind the controls of from time to time in hypothetical scenarios.

Some players, like Channing Frye, are better off analyzing the game than making player personnel decisions…because if Frye was the guy in Boston’s front office, chaos would ensue.

The 15-year NBA veteran threw out an outlandish trade scenario on the “Talkin’ Blazers” podcast involving current Trailblazers guard C.J. McCollum:

"“If you want CJ McCollum and somebody, you’d have to give me Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart,” Frye said, as transcribed by Celtics Wire. “That’s what I see CJ’s value as.”"

I’m sorry, say what now? Why in the world would the Cs ever consider this?

The Houdini recognizes McCollum’s offensive abilities as one of the smoothest isolation scorers in the association. His array of floaters, step-backs, and dribble-drives is akin to a more compact version of Jayson Tatum.

That said, swapping out one–let alone two–of Boston’s defensive dynamos in Brown and Smart is…well, not smart.

Frye was a former Blazer himself so it isn’t as ludicrous (luda!) of a statement when viewed from the lens of a Portland veteran talking about Portland’s current second star in such a complementary way on a Portland Trailblazers podcast.

That said, the only other acceptable player I would accept in a swap sending out Brown and Smart for McCollum is Damian Lillard. That is just as much of a pipe dream as Frye’s suggestion.

Don’t worry Boston Celtics fans, this is just pure fun had by a man who wore Los Angeles Lakers purple and gold and won a championship with LeBron James in Cleveland.

No need to be upset he isn’t hoping for Boston to get a deal done that would benefit them. In the grand scheme of things, there are bigger fish to…Frye.

I’ll see myself out, now.
