Trade No. 1) Boston Celtics move up and add depth, Knicks add Hayward

One of the themes of this offseason has been revolving around the idea that the Boston Celtics could part ways with the remaining year left of Gordon Hayward‘s contract — assuming he opts in.

Being that it has been reported that the New York Knicks are interested in moving back in the draft and are willing to bring on “bad contracts” — as they clearly have the cap space for them — in exchange for assets, it appears the organization would be a perfect partner in regard to Beantown accomplishing both dealing the former All-Star and moving up in the draft.

In this deal, we see the Cs bringing on a solid backup point guard option in Elfrid Payton and a talented piece to add to their lackadaisical frontcourt talent pool in Bobby Portis.

Though he may not be the “sexiest” name in regard to the position, Payton is a fine floor general who is coming off one of his most productive seasons in the NBA — averaged 10 points, 7.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game on 44 percent shooting from the field.

He could come in when Kemba Walker gets his rest on the sideline and has enough experience as a team’s starter where he could fill in at a moment’s notice should the All-Star be relegated to street clothes due to his knee ailments that are expected to be career lasting.

They would also get the stretch big in Portis — 10 points on 36 percent shooting from deep in 2019-20 — as well as the No. 8 overall selection.
