Houston, we have blockbuster

The second deal listed here is a big one, once again rebuilding the entire Cs second unit while sending Gordon Hayward to the San Antonio Spurs. The Houston Rockets are the third team this time, and take on the deals of LaMarcus Aldridge and Derrick White plus several future drafts picks.

Why the Boston Celtics do it

Bringing on the entire current Rockets support system could be a seamless way to build the second unit, although Robert Covington, P.J. Tucker, Eric Gordon, and Danuel House all could make a case to start wherever they are.

Why the San Antonio Spurs do it

It will come down to how badly the San Antonio Spurs want Gordon Hayward, but moving off an albatross like LeMarcus Aldridge could be easily done to facilitate certain deals. Besides a second-round pick, the Spurs would be giving up very little to get a contract-year talent who made the All-Star game the last time money was on the line in his career.

Why the Houston Rockets

At some point, you need to accept that a rebuild is needed, and the Houston Rockets would be conceding that by dealing the heart and soul of their core in Tucker, and Covington. Recouping LaMarcus Aldridge and a few draft picks doesn’t undo any damage, but it’s positive in the right situation.
