Boston Celtics Mock Draft 3.0: Cs solve center problem, add bench depth
By Mark Nilon
With the 30th overall pick, the Boston Celtics select: Tre Jones, Duke
In this latest mock, we see the Boston Celtics finishing off the draft by selecting Duke point guard Tre Jones with the final pick in the first round. The idea that the Cs could be in line to add a player at this specific position is nothing new to the Houdini.
At 30th overall, there are far worse options than taking Jones.
The sophomore guard’s entire 2019-20 season with the Blue Devils is reason to believe he can at the very least lead a team’s second unit in the NBA. Due to Boston’s need for exactly that, the 20-year-old would be a solid flier.
Through 29 games played, Jones put up averages of 16.2 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game on 42 percent shooting from the floor and 36 percent shooting from downtown on 3.7 attempts.
Known mainly for his impressive defensive instincts during his freshman year back in 2018-19, the point guard upped his draft stock significantly in year two by scoring six more points, dishing one more assist, and shooting almost two more 3-point attempts per game at a 10 percent increase in regards to conversion rates.
If they wait till this point to bring on a young point guard prospect, Jones might wind up being the safest bet at 30th overall.
