Boston Celtics: 2 players to target using No. 14 pick
By Mark Nilon
Player to trade 14th overall pick for No. 2) Mitchell Robinson
Like Dejounte Murray, we’ve discussed the idea of the Boston Celtics acquiring Mitchell Robinson a few times in the past. Most recently, my own co-editor Andrew Hughes brought up the idea of bringing the young center to Beantown in a 3-team trade involving the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knickerbockers.
In regard to why the Cs should consider partaking in such a deal, Andrew went on to say:
"Mitchell Robinson could grow into a Clint Capela-type force for the Cs, while Kevin Knox has all the makings of a capable second unit scorer if he can ever stabilize his 3-point shot. Acquiring these two will help them pay less in luxury taxes considering the large outbound salary of Hayward being wiped off the ledger. Moving up in the draft in the process is how you conduct business."
During his second year in the NBA, Mitchell Robinson found himself averaging 9.7 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks per game on a sensational 74 percent shooting from the floor in 23.1 minutes per game.
While it may seem a bit far-fetched to think the Knicks would trade away perhaps their best player, their own high draft pick could land them a rising big man such as James Wiseman, making Robinson somewhat expendable as their skillsets do not at all complement one another.
The Celtics, on the other hand, will likely add on a less-developed big man at 14 anyway, making the prospect of swapping said selection for the truly impressive talents of Robinson very enticing.
While he may not be that highly-coveted floor-spacing center Boston Celtics fans may want, he’s a 7-0, 240-pound big with a skill set that would fit in soundly with the current state of the Cs — rim-protecting, rebound grabbing, efficient shot-making big — and the athleticism to coast up the court on fast breaks alongside Walker, Tatum, Brown, Hayward, and Smart, could prove to be a great complimentary piece to have at the five for years to come.
