The Boston Celtics have been named as a possible team monitoring the contract extension talks between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Andre Drummond. Is there anything to that rumor?

We don’t know how this offseason will go because we have never quite had an offseason like this one. That’s not because the Boston Celtics are somehow simultaneously a contender in need of roster upgrades and a team stocked to the brim with first-round picks to make that happen via the 2020 Draft or via a blockbuster trade.

This is uncharted territory for the league in general. Dates are fluid for when free agency will begin, and an even bigger unknown is how teams will spend the little cap space available throughout the association.

Anyway, the Cs have holes, and a major trade could plug them. But would such a deal for Andre Drummond actually move the needle? It appears it as least somewhat possible if Evan Dammarell of Forbes is to be believed:

"“…if things don’t get better it becomes even easier to flip Drummond and his mammoth expiring contract to another team to recoup assets to assist in their rebuild. Teams like the Boston Celtics, the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers all make sense as trade destinations for Drummond and according to sources, the Celtics are monitoring the situation.”"

It makes sense for the Celtics to inquire about one of the league’s premier big bodies in Drummond. Bam Adebayo and the physical Miami Heat defense was the biggest hurdle in Boston’s quest for championship #18. Adding a specimen like Drummond makes sense…in theory.

That said, Hayward likely moves the Cs closer to a title via his playmaking and switchability on the defensive end. Not to mention, Danny Ainge and co. should be looking for more in a potential return than just Drummond.

If Cleveland wants to discuss any expanded deals that would net the Boston Celtics more immediate contributors and even additional future draft stock, perhaps there’s a very legitimate conversation to be had…
