A bench-bolstering move up in the draft

The first proposed deal is an eight-player swap that sends Gordon Hayward, Vincent Poirier, and Carsen Edwards for Tim Hardaway Jr., Seth Curry, and Dorian Finney-Smith. In addition, the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks swap the #20 and #30 picks in the draft.

Why the Boston Celtics do it

The Cs would give up the best player in the deal, but would also completely overhaul their second unit. Seth Curry and Tim Hardaway Jr. would arguably form the best bench shooting backcourt in league history.

They would also shed the contracts of Vincent Poirier and Carsen Edwards while moving up ten picks in the draft, eventually owning the #14, #20 and #26 picks in the draft.

Why the Dallas Mavericks do it

As previously mentioned, the Mavericks have the means of giving Hayward a much more prominent role than he would have had with the 2020-21 Celtics. In this deal, they would not have to give up much in the way of draft assets, which is good since they gave up plenty of draft capital to acquire Kristaps Porzingis in 2019.

The upside Hayward would bring outweighs moving back so far in the draft.
