Free-agent the Boston Celtics must avoid No. 1) Kris Dunn

When coming into the NBA Draft back in 2016, the hype surrounding Providence star Kris Dunn was overwhelming. Drawing comparisons to All-Star John Wall, the point guard was seen as a sure-fire building block for any franchise interested in scooping him up with their top-5 pick.

Now, fast-forward four years later and you’ll find that the former fifth overall selection has suited up for two different franchises and, most recently with the Chicago Bulls, had his minutes cut down to the second-lowest average since his rookie campaign (24.9 minutes-per-game in 2019-20).

Boasting career averages of 8.3 points, 4.2 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game on 42 percent shooting, it’s easy to see why some may deem Dunn as somewhat of a draft bust when looking at the lofty expectations he had coming into the league.

This is not to say his career cannot be rejuvenated if put in the right situation, however. Holding a solid 25.9 assist percentage it’s evident that the 26-year-old possesses the capability of running an offense and, in turn, be a team’s main one-guard/ facilitator if put into the right environment.

That said, that environment would be best suited to not be with the Boston Celtics. Sure, one could bring up the argument that Brad Stevens has had ample success with underachieving point guards in the past, but this should not be taken as a “sure-fire” result should they take on the fourth-year pro.

Lacking shooting range and consistency, the Houdini believes this type of signing to be an unnecessary gamble being that they have 3 first-round picks where they could simply sign a point guard instead, and at a cheaper cost nonetheless.

I’m actually hoping Dunn can get his act together somewhere in the league, but the Cs should not be the ones to help him along the way.
