The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat will make history as the first two teams not to be #1 or #2 seeds in the Eastern Conference finals when they square off.

It’s been a history-making year in many less-than-ideal ways. One good thing 2020 has brought to fans of both the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat is the fact that this Eastern Conference Finals matchup is the first ever to not include either a #1 or #2 seed:

Boston, of course, reached this point after defeating the Toronto Raptors in the most entertaining postseason matchup in quite some time following a Game 7 win on Friday night. Key plays down the stretch from the likes of Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, and even rookie Grant Williams helped the Celtics clinch victory in what was a drag-em-out defensive war that ended 92-87.

The Miami Heat, on the other hand, had a much easier time in the Eastern Conference semifinals, finishing the Milwaukee Bucks in a gentleman’s sweep of the regular season’s top team. After an ankle injury worsened in Game 4 for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks were only able to muster a single win before being taken out by a team that featured better coaching, a better bench, and All-Stars ready for the moment in Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

Like the Celtics, Miami was able to sweep their first-round matchup. While Boston took down a Philadelphia 76ers team missing one of their top scorers in Ben Simmons, Miami similarly swept an injury-burdened Indiana Pacers team missing their top gun, Domantas Sabonis.

Now, the two teams look ahead to rekindling their rivalry from both franchises’ respective “Big 3” days when they square off in the first Eastern Conference finals matchup without so-called “top” seeds. Game 1 will take place Tuesday night from the Lake Buena Vista bubble in Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex.

Next. Is Bam Adebayo attainable this offseason?. dark
